I have lived on the slopes of Mount Wellington for the greater part of my fifty years. As a teenager it was my world. I walked its tracks and spent many hours exploring damp fern gullies and waterfalls, oblivious to leeches and sodden clothes. On summer days I skipped over boulders on the airy plateau where distant, unknown mountains crowded the western horizon. In winter I trudged with friends through knee-deep snow to the summit where we played on wind-blown drifts and cornices.
